The commercialisation of research in Biological Sciences and a briefing on the new Masters of Bioscience Enterprise degree particularly impressed the new Chinese ambassador to New Zealand, when he visited the University on 5 May.
His Excellency Mr Yuanyuan Zhang and a delegation that included his wife and the Deputy Consul General, Mr Wang Jianzhou, spent a morning at the University meeting with senior academics and discussing research in the School of Biological Sciences and at the Bioengineering Institute with Professor Joerg Kistler and Professor Peter Hunter respectively.
Mr Zhang also met with the Director of the University's new Confucius Institute Nora Yao (Asian Studies), and toured Auckland International and iSPACE.
The visit is part of the University's China strategy, explains Dr Christopher Tremewan, Pro-Vice Chancellor (International). "We have a strong interest in scientific collaboration with China and they are very interested in work going on at The University of Auckland." He notes that in the last two years up to 50 academic delegations from the University have visited China and about 30 have been hosted here in return, most significantly a visit by the Minister of Science and Technology to the Bioengineering Institute in February.
"The ambassador followed up on this recent visit by the Minister," says Chris. "He also indicated that when a group of top Chinese scientists visit New Zealand later this year, their itinerary will include a visit to The University of Auckland.".
The Singapore High Commissioner, Her Excellency Miss Hoy Cheng Seetoh, also joined the visits to the School of Biological Sciences and the Bioengineering Institute and was so impressed that she hopes to organise a future visit by ambassadors from the ASEAN group of nations.
